Believe it or not Kubb is pretty popular. There are National and World Championships played annually. Kubb can be described as a combination of bowling and horseshoes, but due to legend, it is also referred to as Viking Chess (See below for explanation). some rules vary from country to country and region to region, but the ultimate goal is to knock over all of the "Kubbs" on the opposing side of the pitch, then the "King" before the other team does. Games can last from 5 minutes to over an hour.
The history of Kubb is rumored to date back to the age of Vikings, although there has never been any actual evidence of this. The legend goes that Vikings, after conquering their victims would play Kubb. Because it is thought of as as an old Viking game, it has been nicknamed “Viking Chess.” But when the Vikings played it, it didn’t involve wooden blocks. Their Kubb’s were the skulls of their enemies! And to knock them down, they used their enemies femur bones!
